Family Members

NIU is not only for the student, but also for the family. While this is a time of change and independence on the part of the student, NIU does encourage the participation of the family member at Northern Illinois.

NIU Parent's Association

For example, the NIU Parents' Association is open to all parents of NIU students. The Parents' Association provides a link between the university and parents/guardians of NIU students. The association promises to help find an answer to the questions, comments, or concerns that a parent may have regarding the university and to make NIU more understandable to NIU parents. For more information, call the Office of University Programming and Activities, (815) 753-1421.

Family Events

NIU has many family-oriented events like "MacHomer-The Simpsons Do MacBeth" and the annual Halloween string concert. Events that target the NIU family include Homecoming, Parents' Weekend, and Siblings' Week. Call University Programming and Activities (815) 753-1421 to learn more about these dates. Northern encourages all family members to participate in these activities.

Talking to Students

During a student's college years, both students and family members usually begin a new phase in their lives. This new phase of life may bring with it new challenges and problems. There are many issues to consider, such as independence and maturity, academic pressures, adjusting to life at Northern, and occupational outlooks. Here are a few conversation topics to discuss with your student once he or she arrives at Northern Illinois University. Discuss expectations now that he or she is at NIU. Ask about campus events and activities. Encourage your student to get involved. Ask if your student has talked with any professors. Support your student as he or she makes transitions and finds his or her place on campus. Remember to be patient with students as they move into the university environment. NIU has many different opportunities for parents to learn more about NIU without feeling they are burdening their students.
