Northern Illinois University has created many resources for transfer students to learn about NIU. You probably know Northern's Home Page. This website provides many links to NIU academic resources as well as campus offices. Four other good resources appear below.
Northern provides all entering undergraduates with a Student Handbook. This extensive resource guide offers information on student services, organizations, suggestions on how to get involved at NIU, and even a Northern Vocabulary.
NIU Academic Planners can be purchased at NIU bookstores beginning in early June. Not only do the planners provide students with a calendar year featuring NIU events and home games, but the planners also include a quick reference guide to Northern. The planner contains campus phone numbers, library hours, Recreation Center features, and information on the legends and traditions at Northern.
Northern's independent newspaper provides all the most recent information about campus, national, and world-wide issues and activities. You can access NIU's completely student-run newspaper on the web at www.star.niu.edu.
This one credit hour course is designed specifically for transfer students. Transfer Transitions helps students adjust to college life at Northern. The course content includes using university resources, living in a diverse community, managing time, and designing strategies for academic success. To participate in Transfer Transitions, register for University 101 with reference number 6386. Registering for this class places you in Section 5, which meets from 2:00-3:15 p.m., Tuesday/Thursday, at Neptune Central Meeting Room. The instructor is Steve Parsons.
